What qualifies as a CHOuting Club trip?
Any type of outdoor outing qualifies as a CHOuting Club trip (e.g. walking in the woods, bird watching, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, mountain biking, road biking, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing,etc.).
- What should I do if my child wants to go on a CHOuting Club trip, but neither my spouse/partner nor I can accompany them?
It’s perfectly fine to arrange for your child to go on a trip with another SHS parent. Parents are responsible for making these arrangements for their child, and any parent giving another child a ride to a trip is responsible for hiking with the child, monitoring his/her behavior during the entire event, and making sure they return home safely. - What should I do if I have multiple children at SHS who want to go on different CHOuting Club trips occurring the same weekend?
See answer immediately above. Two-parent households with two children often split up – one parent goes with one child on one trip, and the other parent goes with the other child on the other trip. If you have more children who want to go on trips than parents to accompany them, then ask another family in your child’s grade if your child can join them for the trip (see above). - When are trip details and booking instructions announced?
While the club organizers try to announce the dates of the regularly scheduled trips as far in advance as possible so parents can block off weekends, we do not typically send out detailed trip information and booking information until after the completion of the most recent round of trips. AMC reservations are made over a year in advance. - Is it OK to bring siblings on trips?
We typically limit Fall trips to one child and one parent for the first month of booking to make sure as many students from that grade can attend as possible, then we open Fall trips to second parents and siblings. However, we have noticed that a large group of older siblings on a CHOuting Club trip can change the social dynamics of a trip and damper the spirits of their younger siblings. It does tend to work very well to bring younger siblings along.
