Trips

Expeditions to date have included overnight hikes to the AMC huts in the White Mountains, winter weekends in Crawford Notch and Pinkham Notch, spring skiing trips to Tuckerman Ravine, and spring biking/kayaking trips on Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Orinially there were even spring trips to Maine for the eighth grade class.

Volunteer & Leadership

The COUTing Club relies on scores of volunteer trip leaders and coordinators to make its yearly programming a success.

The CHOUTing club is lead and organized by:

  • Spencer Taylor
  • Perry Lubin
  • Katherine Gaughan

Membership Criteria

Anyone affiliated with Shady Hill School (i.e. students, parents, siblings, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, past parents) can be a member of the CHOuting Club. There are no membership dues. Parents, siblings, faculty, administrators and other school staff are welcome to participate in trips, but first priority is always given to SHS students in a particular grade. Students and parents may remain members after graduation. There have been reunion trips for ninth graders, for example.

How are Trips Organized?

Any member can propose any type of trip for any grade, provide other members with logistical information, and serve as a Trip Coordinator. The club organizers have planned trips for families with students in Grades II to VIII. Parents of students in younger grades (Beginners through 1st Grade) are welcome to initiate trips. All CHOuting Club trips are optional and open to all in a particular SHS grade, or multiple grades where trips are co-organized for more than one grade. The CHOuting Club does not offer “trip packages” to SHS families; rather it empowers and aids SHS parents in organizing and executing their own outing ideas.
